      Update from Ms. Steele

      Administrators (5th-8th)

In their quest to understand that reading often means going below the surface, the Administrators are going to look at print advertising in the media.  A surface reading of an ad will tell us what the ad is selling, who is in the ad and what is the setting.  But a “below the surface” reading of the same ad will look for messages about society in general and what roles we play in particular.  In groups the Administrators will have an opportunity to look at both levels as they read through some ads.

In math everyone continues to work at different grade levels.  If you have specific questions about where your student is at, please reach out to me and we can talk about it.

      Update from Ms. Kassie

      K-1 Literacy & Math

In literacy we have been learning about vowel teams that say the long e sound (ee like in feet and ea like in beach) or the long a sound (ai like in rain or ay like in play). This is some BIG work and we have started to read big 2 syllable words with these spelling patterns. Look for some work coming home in the purple folders tomorrow with past weeks’ work.

In math we have started to regroup when adding 2 digit numbers. We are learning different strategies to do this. We talked today about that, in math it is not about having the right answer, but understanding what is going on with the numbers. This is why we practice so many ways to solve problems.

      • K-1 Literacy and Math Work and Play to try at home
        • Literacy– Work on finding the ee,ea, and ai, ay spellings around you. What do they say?
        • Math– Get out a deck of cards. Pull 3. Make the biggest 2 digit number you can. Add the third card using pictures or grouping the 10s and ones to do the addition.
      K-2 Science

In science we are now studying the day sky after learning about the moon and stars. Ask students what they have been learning about shadows. Can a statue’s shadow move? How?

      Update from Mr. B

      BeBop Literacy & Math (2nd-4th)

Beboppers are continuing to practice telling time to the minute, finding the difference between three-digit money amounts, comparing data, digging into the new /oo/ “other” vowel phoneme and getting a plethora of practice via Super Ruth and writing words from Unit 15. They are also listening to variations of the same trickster tales.

      Art Literacy

In Art Literacy, both classes are dabbling in a Georgia O’Keeffe composition to inform their study of color and value.

      Update from Mr. Sharp

      Field Studies (3rd-8th)

We wrapped up a very successful swim program last Friday. Students enjoyed some free time in the pool and we got to see some very acrobatic jumps off the high dive. This week we spent our first afternoon working on the yearbook. Our deadline is coming up to complete it so the kids are working hard this month on page design and final touches.

      Health Class

We are back to doing P.E. on Tuesday and Thursday going forward. I introduced the students to frisbees and discs on Tuesday. We set up a disc golf course in the forest and will be playing some disc golf the next couple weeks. We will try playing ultimate frisbee as well once we get a little better with our throwing and catching.

Meet the new Upper Grade Teacher, Killian Sump
