Thank you to our incredible volunteers!

The Italian Dinner on March 18th was a resounding success thanks to the MANY volunteers who worked behind the scenes and throughout the night. To all the parents, grandparents, teachers and staff who did numerous jobs: helped students create desserts, baked lasagna, shopped for groceries, chopped veggies, served up food, washed dishes, donated wine, decorated & cleaned the Community Hall, and MORE!

A special shout out to Siobhan Gray, Shawn Steele, Charity Pape and Jak Rands!

Grazie, Grazie, Grazie!

This year BBS is heading to San Francisco!

Every year we take our older students on a big trip to wrap up the school year. In my 10 years leading BBS we have camped on the Oregon coast, rafted the Grande Ronde river, traveled to the Siskyous, road tripped to Portland & Astoria, as well as many other adventures. But we have never done a trip quite like this. We will be flying to San Francisco in May to spend a week exploring all that the big city has to offer small town students from Camp Sherman, OR.

There are several important reasons BBS puts the energy and effort into making these end of year trips happen. We have found that overnight trips push our students in new ways- academically, socially, and personally. They expand our understanding of the world and our place in it. These trips provide an opportunity to form deeper bonds with each other and ourselves. Students often report that these trips are some of the most memorable and impactful parts of their time at BBS.

While these annual trips are usually focused on Oregon’s natural and cultural history, this year we are heading to San Francisco. This is part of a larger revisioning of our BBS programs. Going forward we plan on a 4 year rotation of trips to include: one outdoor school trip on the coast, one outdoor trip in the desert, one Oregon history trip, and one out of state trip to a big city (like San Francisco). The hope is that our students will get to participate in all 4 of these destinations if they stay at BBS through their upper grade years.

You may recall that last year the PTO fundraising efforts were for a Washington DC trip. After considering many options, we decided that San Francisco was a better fit for our group of students and staff this year. (DC may be chosen as a destination in the future – that will be up to the families and staff in the next 4 year rotation)! Students are enthusiastic about flying on a plane and taking public transportation. San Francisco will expose them to a diverse urban environment and we plan to experience the art and culture of the city, including different foods. Students will help choose the activities, museums, and events.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our PTO fundraisers like the wreath sale and jogathon. The community support is what makes experiences like this possible. Not many public schools out there get to do so much traveling. I can say from experience that these end of year trips are always one-of-a-kind opportunities and we are so fortunate to get to do them on an annual basis. Thank you!
