Hello Families,

Our new counselor Rachel O’Connor started today!  Rachel joined the K-1 tea time (photo above) and was introduced during lunch where students got to ask her fun questions like what’s your favorite season (spring), cats or dogs (cats), and what do you like better – swimming or skiing (skiing)! 🙂

Rachel will reach out to families in early April when she begins her regular schedule at BBS on Tues/Wed/Thurs.

Thanks to all who supported the Italian Dinner last night! With an incredible volunteer crew and the students providing stellar service, it was a fantastic night all around. Guests were so happy with the service they said BBS should make it an annual event!

      Update from Ms. Steele

      Administrators (5th-8th)

The upper grade students have been putting all their energy, both creatively and academically into the fundraiser for the San Francisco trip.  Executive functioning was used to create grocery lists, proportional reasoning was used to increase recipes, concentration was used to save any fingers while being sous chefs and professionalism was used while being the best wait staff ever!!

In other news, we have been learning about ancient Egypt (and Mr. Sharp was the guest teacher)!  We are working on POW’s (problem of the week) together in math class and pushing our brains to look at math away from textbook problems.

We will be going on a jaunt along the Metolius Friday afternoon, even in bad weather, so remind your student about warm, layered clothes.

      Update from Ms. Kassie

      K-1 Literacy & Math

Thanks for taking the time to meet for conferences last week! It was wonderful to connect. I sent an email yesterday to reach out about feedback and any questions you might have after meeting with me thus far from the year.

In literacy we are still working with the tricky schwa sounds.

In math we are working with numbers up to 120, thinking about skipping counting by 10s.

K-1 Literacy and Math Work and Play to try at home

      • Literacy – With spring break around the corner, have students pick out some new books to try to read or review some of the paper books that have been sent home. The library is a great resource for some new books!
        • I will be sending home new little paper books this Friday as well

      • Math – Using dimes and pennies are a great way to think about 10s and 1s. Have students count up old change lying around!

        • Can they make it to over 100?

        • Also try skip counting by 10s not starting at 10.  (2,12,22,32…)

      K-2 Science

We will be wrapping up our social science civics unit focusing on how to make our classroom a fair and just community. Students will be creating ideas and acting them out. Then they will vote on a set of classroom rules or laws to make sure we are safe and can all get along.

      Update from Mr. B

      BeBop Literacy & Math (2nd-4th)

In math, the Bebop Crew has been using their recent lessons on range, mean, median and mode and applying it toward their monthly temperature collection/graphing, considering fractional parts when working with cups – gallons, and wrapping up a math diagnostic.

In literacy, the Beboppers are working on R-controlled spellings with or, ore, oor, our, ore, reading passages that highlight these spellings and practicing their cursive on a varied set of R-controlled words, phrases and sentences.

      Art Literacy

In art literacy, both classes are demonstrating the difference between shape and form with an animal sketch of a bunny and frog.

      Update from Mr. Sharp

      Field Studies (3rd-8th)

We are winding down our winter season and getting ready for a short break next week. It will be an action-packed April at BBS so hopefully all the kids enjoy some time away before the final push.

We haven’t done much in Field Studies this week. We spent Monday afternoon working on our yearbook and learning more graphic design skills. We plan to start coding our Alvik robots soon but it looks like after break will be the time to start.

      Health Class

In Health class both groups are learning about social/emotional health. The older group has been discussing social skills including the difference between communicating passively, assertively, or aggressively. The younger group is learning about recognizing and managing emotions. We will talk about personal boundaries and privacy tomorrow before break.
