Hello Families,

Welcome back from Spring Break! Students were happy to see the basketball court cleared of construction materials (and snow!). This is much needed (re)expansion of our play area.

We have a few new faces at BBS! As mentioned earlier, our new counselor Rachel O’Connor has started and will be at BBS on Tues/Wed/Thurs. We also have two new students starting this week, welcome to Charlie & John! Finally, you may see another new face supporting students with tutoring – Rebeccah DeKeyser (a BBS alum!) will be here on Tues & Thurs afternoons.

Our swim program begins on Friday, please see important reminders below.

      Update from Ms. Steele

      Administrators (5th-8th)

Welcome back to school from a lovely spring break.  It seems like everyone got the rest they needed.  The last two days have been really mellow in class.

In math, the students have a list of assignments that are due either on Monday 4/7 or Wednesday 4/9.  Everyone understands that if they need more time than the hour of math each day, they need to take the math home and complete it there.

We are starting a new literacy unit called “Reading Nonfiction Like a Detective” so we are spending this week rereading Scat in class.  Everyone is reading it, so that we can write a two page essay pertaining to a certain event in the book.  This rereading of a text, to go into more detail and depth is a great skill to have at the high school level and I am glad we are getting an opportunity to do this.

We are already starting to think and discuss what kinds of food we want to make at the hostel in San Francisco.

      Update from Ms. Kassie

      K-1 Literacy & Math

We welcomed John to our class this week! Please talk to your students about ways they have made their new friend feel welcome.

In literacy we are working on final e spelling like in make, bake, date as well as still working on 2 syllable words.

In math we have been working on comparing larger numbers with the greater than >, Less than <, or equal to = symbols.

K-1 Literacy and Math Work and Play to try at home

      • Literacy – Work on spelling with final e and see where you can find it around you
      • Math – Find larger numbers around you and ask students to compare the numbers.
      K-2 Science

We finished our civics unit. Students brought home some papers today. They have a section I asked them to do with you about how they can make their community better. Please take a look at it.

Our new science unit will look a little different while we are in the swim program. Mr. B and myself will both be teaching about the sky and Earth in different ways.

      Update from Mr. B

      BeBop Literacy & Math (2nd-4th)

The Beboppers added another crew member! Welcome Charlie!

In math, Bebop has begun to explore the histories of Fahrenheit and Celsius as well as building on their understanding of fractional parts / division concepts.

In literacy, students are practicing 1-3 syllable words with /er/ spelled er, ir, ur, and ear. They are in the intro stages of trickster tales. This unit of study will yield many projects and get students behind good literature!

      Art Literacy

Mr. B is teaching SCI-ART with the K-2 for the next few weeks. They are working hard on their Moon Books!

      Update from Mr. Sharp

      Field Studies (3rd-8th)

We came back from spring break this week to several new faces. We welcomed two new students into the school as well as two new staff. Rachel O’Connor got started this week as our new school counselor. She is working on getting to know the students and how she can best support them. Rebeccah DeKeyser also began working at BBS this week. She will be here on a very part time basis providing additional literacy instruction to individual students or small groups.

In the classroom we started working with our new robots, called Alvik. 3-8 grade students are learning to program Alvik to do simple tasks, move around the room, and flash LED lights in different patterns. The robot uses a simple coding language called Mblock which is perfect for learning the basics of computer coding.

      Health Class

We are gearing up for the start of our swim program on Friday. We have 6 afternoon lessons lined up in the next couple weeks. This will be our P.E. class for the first half of April.
