Hello Families,

Construction continues to wrap up and there are lots of small things yet to be finished. We hope to be using our new commons for lunch in the next couple weeks.

If you haven’t already filled out this Family Survey (not the community survey, which is a different version for non-parents), please do so before February 25th. Your input is valuable in helping BBS make plans for improvement. Thank you for your time and participation!

Scroll to the end of this page to see two fun events happening in Sisters – a free children’s museum Feb 22-23 and a community dance & concert on Feb 28.

      Update from Ms. Steele

      Administrators (5th-8th)

The Administrators are learning about Ancient Civilizations, like the city-state of Sumer and Mesopotamia.  They are also studying the earliest empires of the Akkadians and Babylonians.  From these empires we got our first set of codified laws called Hammurabi’s Code.  As we talk more and more about early cultures, the students will gain knowledge about culture for their own independent “create a culture” project.

Everyone should continue to read Scat and The Life of Pi.  There is no packet to complete this week, but students have taken home some sticky notes to do annotations.  If they did not understand this assignment, they can check in with me.

In math, everyone continues to work at their own pace and is also working on a POW (problem of the week).  Many students have checked in with me regarding how to do their best work on this problem.  Great job.

We also had a good conversation about being upstanders and not bystanders in situations where others are being put down or bullied. Check in with them about what kind of support they need from you around how to stick up for each other.

      Update from Ms. Kassie

      K-1 Literacy & Math

In literacy we are working on open and closed syllables. Students are working on reading and spelling words that can change from one to the other. For example, shed is closed with a short vowel sound, but take away the d and you have she with a long vowel sound.

In math we have been wrapping up some units by doing work in our portfolios.

      K-2 Science

In Science we wrapped up our sound and light unit by recording what we have learned in our scientific notebooks. See pictures below.

      Update from Mr. B

      BeBop Literacy & Math (2nd-4th)
Beboppers are exploring EVERY way to make 25 cents (and other amounts) using quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, writing number sentences using groups of cookies, considering equivalent fractions, listening to poetry with a beat, spelling and syllable stretching words with examples of vowel teams, writing dictated sentences with correct spellings and punctuation, and finishing comprehension around Grandma’s Records.
      Art Literacy (3rd-8th)

In art literacy, students are exploring a third way that ART speaks; through form (shape is 2-D and form is 3-D).

      Update from Mr. Sharp

      Field Studies (3rd-8th)

We are fully in the winter season at BBS. We are having a lot of fun playing in the snow at recess and up at Hoodoo. Students have done a great job coming prepared to Hoodoo on Friday. It would be helpful if they also bring those warm layers and snow boots to school so they don’t get wet at recess. Some students are coming to school with sneakers and no jacket. The playground is a slush pile right now with puddles so those waterproof layers are helpful.

In Field Study we wrapped up a lesson today where we programmed LED lights to light up in a variety of ways using a Potentiometer. You can ask your child what this device does.

      Health Class

We jumped into some new Health topics this week. I pulled the “Great Body Shop” curriculum out of storage and we will spend the next month or so working through this program. This week we are learning about eating healthy.
