Hello Families,

Students and Ms. Sharp have been very busy this week practicing songs and plays. Tomorrow will be a big day with dress rehersals during the day followed by the performance in the evening. The kids are feeling ready and we can’t wait to see you there!

Two of our new students will be starting on Monday! Please introduce yourself and say hi to Maelynn (8th) and Matthew (7th).

  • Administrators (5th-7th): The Administrators have been extra busy this last week prepping for the winter performance.  You may have noticed there hasn’t been any homework the last few weeks.  We will get homework going again next week and definitely when we return from winter break in January.  The big news is that we are gaining four students (two next week) and will be moving to a slightly larger portable classroom while we wait for our permanent classroom to be completed.  We will combine moving adventures with class work: the 6th graders are finishing up a unit on decimals and the 7th graders are finishing up their unit on equations.  We are continuing to work on understanding Bettleheim’s works in our fairy tales unit and are making fun slide shows about early civilizations in social studies.

From Ms. Kassie: kdemarsh@blackbutte.k12.or.us

  • K-1 Literacy: This week kinders have been joining in with 1st grade students to work on our heart words and digraphs. We learned about the digraph ck this week. Ask students what they remember about the patterns of when to use ck.
  • K-1 Math: In math kinder students are working on when to use addition and subtraction. First graders are working on making a 10 with subtraction (15-7= 15-5 and then 10-2=8)

⇒  K/1 Literacy & Math work & play to try at home ⇐

    • Have first grade students try spelling words with the digraphs sh, ch, th, wh, and ck.

    • Have kindergarten work on reading heart words

    • Have kinders do subtraction stories around them. There were 4 cookies and I ate 3…

    • Quiz 1st grade students on their 10 friends- 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5… and then how can they use what they know to solve problems like 14-8, so 14-4=10 and 10-4=6, so 14-8=6.

  • K-2 Science: In social studies we have been learning about holidays that are celebrated in the winter. We have spent a lot of time thinking about winter and it being the darkest time of the year, at least here in the Northern part of the Northern hemisphere. We have learned about reasons why people celebrate this time of year and what some different celebrations are. Ask your students about these.
  • ⇒ Next week we will be working on a winter craft that will require some jars. If you have an old jam or pickle jar, would you please send a clean, clear jar with your student?

  • Bebop (2nd-4th) Math & Literacy: Ms. Liz has been subsituting for Mr. B this week and students are busy with Winter Performance rehersals.

From Mr. Sharp: dsharp@blackbutte.k12.or.us

There was a lot going on in my role at BBS this past week. I spent the end of last week at the Oregon School Law Conference learning from other school administrators and attorneys. Thanks to the staff for stepping up in my absence. Then it was off to the Holiday Bazaar. This has been fully revived into a bustling community gathering with many friends and neighbors.

  • Field Studies: On Monday this week my Field Study class completed their tree quiz in the forest. Most of the students did an amazing job learning the many tree species in the Metolius basin. The rest of this week has mostly been spent gearing up for the Winter Performance. I am looking forward to seeing you all Thursday night for an exciting show.

From Ms. Sharp: jsharp@blackbutte.k12.or.us

  • Performing Arts: The kids are working so hard in their rehearsals for the show this week! There is so much excitement, but also alot of focus and concentration as we prepare for this celebrated event.
  • If you purchased a costume and would like reimbursement please email Koli at ptopresident@blackbutte.k12.or.us. Any costume purchased by the PTO will be donated to BBS for future use.
