Hello Families,

Thanks so much to our K-2 families for your flexibility yesterday with afternoon pick up! This helped enable the upper grade OSU field trip which was a big success.

Big news! BBS will welcome 4 new students into the Administrator class in January. To accommodate this bigger class, BBS will have a mobile unit set up on the front grass. After winter break, Ms. Steele will teach the upper graders in this unit instead of the Bus Barn office.

Art Club update: We have our next session planned for our K-2 students beginning in January and it will be musically-focused. Look for details later this week!

Read on for news and updates.

Whole School:

  • Dec. 12 Winter Performance: Students arrive at 5:30pm. Show begins at 6pm.
    • Bring a treat to share at the Dessert Potluck immediately after the show.
    • ⇒ Students will be assigned clean up jobs to be completed after enjoying dessert

  • Dec. 13: NO SCHOOL

  • Administrators (5th-7th): The Administrators are settling back into a routine after their break.  It can sometimes be challenging for students to align themselves with the classroom expectations after such a long time away.  A conversation at home around what makes a productive, focused learning environment for all students would be greatly appreciated.  Ask your student what type of an environment helps them learn.  Ask your student if they think their actions in the classroom help other students learn.
  • Literacy: We are continuing to focus on writings by Bruno Bettleheim regarding fairy tales.  The students don’t always agree with his opinion and that makes for some lively discussions.
  • Math: Math rolls along with the 7th graders taming the equation and distributive property beasts.  The 6th graders are finishing up with dividing decimals.  In social studies we are reviewing the first 4 lessons in the world history text.

From Ms. Kassie: kdemarsh@blackbutte.k12.or.us

Thanks again for enabling the upper grade field trip yesterday. I know we ask more of our parents than other schools, but because of your support we can give our students wonderful opportunities like the one yesterday!

  • K-1 Literacy: In kinder literacy students have learned the letters, i, a, c, s, h, m, p and t. They have started to read and spell with those words! What a success! In 1st grade literacy we have been working on digraphs- sh, ch, th, and wh. They have also been reading and spelling words with those combinations.

In math kinder students are doing subtraction and rocking it. 1st grade students are working to make a 10. (7+5=10+2=12)

  • K-1 Math: In math kinder students are doing subtraction and rocking it. 1st grade students are working to make a 10. (7+5=10+2=12)

⇒  Work & Play to try at home ⇐

  • Have first grade students try spelling words with the digraphs mentioned above.

  • Have kindergarten work on reading combinations with the letters mentioned above.

  • Have kinders do subtraction stories around them. There were 4 cookies and I ate 3…

  • Quiz 1st grade students on their 10 friends- 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5… and then how can they use what they know to solve problems like 8+6, 8+2=10 and then 4 more is 14.

  • K-2 Science: In our Science class we have switched to a social science study of winter celebrations around the world. We learned about kids from different countries, where they live, what they eat for breakfast, and what their housing looks like. We have flags hanging in our classroom from around the world and students used what they observed and created flags of their own.

In 2 weeks we will be working on a winter craft that will require some jars. If you have an old jam or pickle jar, would you please send a clean, clear jar with your student?

  • Bebop (2nd-4th) Math & Literacy: Beboppers are working with horizontal, vertical and oblique line segments to help classify all 26 CAPITAL letters. They will be using a Venn Diagram to order their data. As part of a math/literacy combo, students predicted which 10 letters in the English language show up most often. Groups are using an Aesop’s Fable to tally this data. Students are still hard at work on their compare and contrast essay and dabbling into the wide space of open syllables as part of their decoding program.

From Mr. Sharp: dsharp@blackbutte.k12.or.us

I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving break. We came back this week to good spirits and eager learners.

  • Field Studies: We are now working to analyze the data we collected before break about our local trees. The students are doing some challenging math to figure out the density of trees in different parts of the forest to determine if they are healthy or not. Students will have a quiz over the local tree species on Monday. Then our focus will shift to performance prep for the rest of the week.
  • Field Trip: Ms. Steele and I had a really fun trip to Corvallis yesterday for the Beavers Beyond the Classroom event. It was a high energy event with thousands of school children cheering and dancing for the Women’s basketball team. We then did a short campus tour to introduce the college experience to our students and get them imagining themselves in college some day. Our students had excellent behavior on the whole trip.
  • I will be gone the rest of this week at the Oregon School Law Conference. Thank you to Ms. Liz for teaching while I am away.

    • Performing Arts: We are continuing to rehearse and get everything ready for the show this week and can’t wait to show off our hard work for you! A big thanks to Scout and her grandma, Neva, who sewed the essential prop for The Mitten–the mitten itself! Also thanks to Ashlee and Nicole who made props for The Real Deal. So grateful for all the families for everything you do to support our show.
    • If you purchased a costume and would like reimbursement please email Koli at ptopresident@blackbutte.k12.or.us. Any costume purchased by the PTO will be donated to BBS for future use.
